Adeline E. Bakken, age 101, of Moorhead, MN, formerly of Hawley, MN, died Sunday, February 6, 2011, in Essentia Health, Fargo, ND.Adeline E. Halverson Bakken was the third in a family of eight, born to Peter and Sofia Halverson on a farm south of Audubon, MN, on March 21, 1909. She attended school in Audubon. After one year of teacher training school she taught in a one-room school south of Audubon. A few years later, she taught in the village of Cormorant.On June 16, 1933, she married Gunnar Bakken and for 26 years, they lived in Hawley where he was the manager of the Hawley Co-op Creamery. She was superintendent of the Sunday school, President of the PTA and President of the Church Women. She was instrumental in the publishing of numerous cook books for the Hawley Lutheran Church. In 1961, Adeline and Gunnar moved to Cass Lake and became owners of the Dairy Queen store. Gunnar died there in 1969, after which she moved back to Hawley in 1971 to be the secretary of Hawley Lutheran Church. She served for 12 years. Since her retirement, she has been an active volunteer in several church-related programs.Adeline has resided at Eventide Catered Living since 2002.She is survived by three children, Jane Ann Louis Hull of Bloomington, MN, Dr. Curtis Ruth Bakken of Park Rapids, MN and James Sandy Bakken of Georgetown, TX; sister, Randina Poels of San Diego, CA; brother, Lester Halverson of Bermuda Run, NC; eight grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren.She was preceded in death by her husband, Gunnar Bakken, three sisters, two brothers, and grandson, Samuel Bakken.In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Sam Bakken Memorial Scholarship Fund at Concordia College or to the charity of your choice.
