Adelle M. Schenck, 81, of Hawley MN, peacefully left us for her eternal resting place on Friday, December 2nd, 2022. She was surrounded by her family, under the Care of Hospice of the Red River Valley, after a courageous, 7-year battle with Alzheimer’s. The family is grateful for the care of River Pointe of Moorhead.
Adelle Marie Schenck (Kasin) was born on December 9th, 1940, in Hawley Township. She attended 1st grade in a country schoolhouse in rural Hawley and grades 2- 12 in Hawley. She was active in school, was a “smart-as-a-whip,” 4.0 student, and elected homecoming queen of her graduating class of 1958. It is during these years that she met her first and only love, Donald. They were married on July 16, 1960.
Adelle worked as a bookkeeper for Massey Ferguson in Fargo right out of high school. When Donald accepted a job with USDA, they travelled to Ohio and the east coast from 1963-1971. She was an accomplished quilter, cook, baker, gardener, and card player. A friend of the family called her the best cook west of the Mississippi, yet her true joy and purpose came from her role as wife and mother.
In 1971, Donald and Adelle returned to the city where they grew up and bought a farm in rural Hawley. They brought their children, Michael, Michelle, Matthew, Mark with them to start this new adventure and Martin was born shortly after. Adelle was first out of bed and quick to the barn to help Donald and the boys milk the cows and complete the chores. More than a quintessential farm wife, she did it all and she did it well (except driving the tractor). Respected and respectful, she was a 4H leader that led by example. She was humble and deflected attention directed towards her. Her winning smile warmed those around her, and her quick wit charmed everyone. Alzheimer’s took her memory yet never took away her legacy or the essence of who she was. She never ceased to be the wife, mother, grandmother, mother-in-law, and sister we all loved.
Adelle is survived by her husband Donald, children; Michael (Cindy) Schenck and their sons; Travis (Megan), Aaron (Jamie) and Jeremy; Michelle (Dan) Schulz and their son Zachary; Matthew (Kimberly) Schenck and his children Cody (Audrianna) and Kelsey; Mark (Jill) Schenck and children, Allison, Nathan (Lea), Alecia and Nolan; Martin (Darcy) Schenck and their children; Jordyn, Jayden, Jaxon and Jaymeson and 7 great-grandchildren. Her siblings, Dennis (Linda) Kasin, Gerald Kasin and Ronald (Alverna) Kasin. She is preceded in death by her mother, Lillie Kasin.
Visitation will be held on Friday, December 9th, 2022, from 5-7 pm at Hawley Lutheran Church, with a service for family and friends at 7pm. Funeral services with Livestream will be held at Hawley Lutheran Church at 11:00am, Saturday, December 10th, 2022.
Gifts of remembrance are welcome to Hospice of the Red River Valley or another charity close to your heart.
