Arnold “Arnie” Hill, age 86, of Dilworth, MN passed away on Monday, May 11, 2020 at Bethany on University.
Arnold Duane Hill was born on June 5, 1933 in Plummer, MN to Urho and Marion (Berg) Hill. Arnie attended school in Red Lake Falls and helped on his family’s farm. Following graduation, Arnie entered the Army and was first stationed in Korea before transferring to Vietnam and then Germany. While in Germany, Arnie met the love of his life, Irene Wurl, and they were married on October 15, 1964 in Bad Kreuznach, Germany. Arnie and Irene moved every two years while he was in the military and lived in Bad Kreuznach, Pirmasens, Hanau, Kaiserslautern, and Stuttgart. During his time in the service, Arnie and Irene traveled throughout Europe exploring Holland’s tulip fields, climbing the Leaning Tower of Pisa in Venice, attending a Memorial Day service in France, and visiting many famous attractions such as old castles and historic landmarks like the Berlin Wall. After Arnie left the military, they moved back to Red Lake Falls where Arnie worked at the Post Office until his retirement in 1981.
While living in Red Lake Falls, Arnie enjoyed spending time doing home improvement projects on their home. After his retirement, Arnie and Irene moved to Texas to enjoy the warmer weather and spent their summers traveling and working various jobs including work camper in Lake Sakakawea, ND, tour guides at a lighthouse in OR, and a relief manager at the Boundary Waters, MN. They enjoyed spending their retirement traveling across the United States in their camper with their two cats visiting many historical sites such as Arlington National Cemetery, VI and Gettysburg National Cemetery, PA. They also traveled to the Lake of the Woods to fish for walleye, Canada to visit friends, Disney World in Florida and California, Hudson Bay to see polar bears, and Alaska to enjoy the wildlife and scenery. Arnie and Irene moved back to Dilworth where they have made their home since. Arnie was a member of the Thief River Falls Masonic Lodge #236.
Arnie is survived by his wife of 55 years, Irene Hill; son, Jeff (Bridgette) Hill of OR; daughter, Kathy (Norm) Jacobson-Lydy of OR; stepson, Bernd (Roberta) Wessolowski of Fargo; grandchildren, Elsa, Andrea, Scott, Jamie, Nathan, Austin, and Megan; and six great-grandchildren.
Arnie was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Leonard Hill; sisters, Joyce Gervais, Jene Harbott, and Yvonne Blokzal.
A private service will be held at Wright Funeral Home. Burial will take place at Fargo National Cemetery following the service.
