Avis Kathreen Hoagland, 85 years old was born March 22, 1938, in Hawley, Minnesota, and baptized at Hawley Lutheran Church.
On June 22, 1961, Avis married Gene Hoagland, a resident of St. Cloud, MN in Fort Sill, OK.
Avis passed away on Thursday, October 5, 2023, at Lilac Memory Care in Dilworth, MN surrounded by her husband of 62 years and her 3 children.
Avis was a resident of Hawley, MN from birth through high school and retired with Gene in their home for over 50 years outside of Hawley. She and Gene were residents of Moorhead, MN for 2 years recently.
She was a member of Hawley Lutheran Church and Messiah Lutheran Church in Fargo, ND
Avis graduated from Hawley High School in 1956 and went on to attend Concordia College, Moorhead, MN for two years and later graduated from Bethesda Lutheran Hospital Nursing School as a Licensed certificate Practical Nurse in 1960. Avis worked in medical clinics and hospitals primarily in Pediatrics in Oahu, Hawaii, St. Cloud, MN, and Fargo, ND.
Her hobbies included listening to music of many genres. She played saxophone in high school and college bands, and also piano in high school and for the church choir. She enjoyed reading, knitting and embroidery. Her special life with Gene included traveling, primarily to Hawaii as a newly married couple for two years during his Army enlistment. They revisited Oahu on their 80th birthdays and found the apartment building they lived in from the 1960’s. They were snow birds in Gulf Shores, AL for 20 years. Avis and Gene shared the love of dancing. They spent many hours together gliding across the floor. Many friends and connections were made and cherished. Their greatest joys were to share their experiences with family and friends. Avis also traveled to Norway with family. She was a wonderful, dedicated, and loving wife, proud mother and grandmother, concerned nurse, and friend to all.
She loved spending time with her grand kids and always looked forward to those moments of sitting on the couch reading to them or being out in the yard watching them play. She never missed any other school events and was the first to wave and clap when they finished their accomplishments. She enjoyed sitting on the deck at their house in Hawley just listening to the birds that were always there, with the help of Gene installing bird feeders. She also loved the beach and all the time she spent walking on the beach.
She will be dearly missed by her family and many friends.
