Barbara J. Lammers

January 16, 1930 — February 12, 2014

Barbara “Barb” J. Gess Lammers, 84, of Fargo, ND, most recently living in Zimmerman, MN, died peacefully at home surrounded by her family on February 12, 2014, from pancreatic cancer.

Barb was born and baptized on January 16, 1930 in Nerstrand, MN, and reaffirmed her faith as an adult through Confirmation at Our Saviors Lutheran Church, Moorhead, MN. Barb attended school in Kenyon and Moorhead, MN.

On November 12, 1949, she married the love of her life, Donald Lammers in Moorhead, MN. They started their new life together by calling Moorhead, MN, their home until they moved to their new house in Fargo, ND, in 1959. Their love for each other and their children filled their home with happiness. She and Donald were married for 63 years until his death in January, 2013. Although her family will miss her greatly, we have peace in knowing that they are together once again.

Barb loved to sew and spent countless hours fixing and making clothes for her family and friends. Barb’s passion for sewing carried into her professional life as she worked at L. Milo Matson Furriers and also sewed custom draperies for deLendrecies. She was also employed by Pierce Printing until January, 1986.

She and her family attended St. Matthews’s church in Fargo where she served as a Sunday school teacher. Besides her strong faith, she was an excellent cook and you could always smell something baking in the oven. Barb always had treats on hand and her family and friends were always welcomed not only at their home in Fargo, as well at their lake home. Barb was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother and enjoyed attending school functions, sporting activities and special events with her family.

Barb was a humble person and never wanted or needed much in her life other than having her husband by her side and the rest of the family nearby. She was not afraid of hard work and never complained about the challenges she endured with her many battles with cancer. She thought of everyone else first even in her final days. She would want to be sure if you were cold, you had a blanket or if you were hungry you had a snack to eat. Her strength and compassion are the gifts her family will treasure the most. Our greatest memories are the times she has dried our tears, cheered us on, loved us unconditionally, and cared for all of us so tenderly until she was called to her heavenly home.

Fairview Home Care and Hospice provided amazing care in her final days and for that the family is grateful.
Barbara is survived by her children; D. Keith, Fargo ND, Douglas Coty, Glyndon MN, LaVonne Tim Tuck, New Kent VA, Kimberly Bob Nerby, Moorhead MN, Denice Barry Johnson, Zimmerman MN, and Teresa Mark Buth, Fargo ND. She is also survived by six grandchildren; Bryan Lammers, Matthew Tuck, Steven Nerby, Logan and Bailey Johnson and Bryton Buth; twin sister, Beverly Kirkhorn and brother, David Gess, sister-in-laws, Grace Lammers and Lorraine Edwards. She was preceded in death by her devoted and loving husband, Donald, her parents, Walter Gess, and Lucille Pete Rehder, sister, Marjorie Frisch and brothers, Duane, Neal and Marvin Gess.
