Bernadine O. Ursin

Bernadine O. Ursin, 92, of Fargo, ND, died Thursday, December 14, 2017, at Sanford Health Medical Center in Fargo.

Bernadine Olivian Gunderson was born December 6, 1925 to Marcus and Bertha (Vettleson) Gunderson in Gary, MN.  In 1943 she graduated from high school in Gary as valedictorian of her class and went on to obtain a teaching degree from Moorhead State Teachers College.

On July 1, 1950, she was united in marriage to Dr. Otto E. Ursin in Gary, MN.  Together they had three children: Steven, David, and Cindy.  Bernadine taught grade school in Lake Park, MN for three years, and then taught 6^th grade at Emerson Smith School in Fargo until she quit working to raise her children.

Bernadine and Otto were enthusiastic travelers and enjoyed exploring different cultures, taking many special trips together after Otto’s retirement to places such as Spain, England and Morocco.  They also loved spending time at their lake home on Long Lake, near Vergas, MN.  They had a large group of friends and loved to entertain. Otto died on October 21, 2009.

Bernadine enjoyed many things in life, but her greatest passion was in loving people.  She cared deeply for her friends and family and she would do anything to help anyone.  She was always giving compliments and providing comfort to those around her.  She also had a wonderful sense of humor and would always try to make people laugh in tough situations. Bernadine always took great pride in her appearance and her home. Strong in her Christian faith, she was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Moorhead. She enjoyed bridge club, circle,  and spending time volunteering for the Plains Art Museum and the Hjemkomst Center.

She is survived by her children, David (Bobbie) Ursin, of St. George, UT, and Cindy (Jim) O’Day, of Fargo; sister, Mavis Garrett; grandchildren, Dan (Michelle) O’Day, Ashlie (Jules Ameel) O’Day, Teresa O’Day, Bob Kane and Jamie Crane, and 6 great-grandchildren, plus one on the way.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and infant son, Steven.

Memorials are preferred to Trinity Lutheran Church in Moorhead.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday, December 20, 2017, at 11:00 A.M., with a memorial gathering for one hour before the service, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Moorhead.  Interment will be in Prairie Home Cemetery in Moorhead.
