Bernice I. Schulstad-Olson

Bernice I. Schulstad-Olson, 90, of Hawley, formerly Lake Park, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 5, 2012, at her home, surrounded by her loving family. Bernice Berg was born on June 22, 1921 in rural Lake Park to Palmer and Olga Berg. She attended school in Lake Park and graduated from Hawley High School. Bernice graduated from Moorhead State Teachers College and taught in rural schools in Twin Valley and Hawley.Bernice married Eugene Schulstad in 1942. They resided in Lake Park and Hawley. She was a very active lifetime member of Eksjo Lutheran Church, involved in Sunday school and women's groups. She also participated in many school and community organizations, including PTA, Scouts, and Ladies Auxiliary. Bernice was devoted to her family and had a great love for children. She enjoyed playing cards with friends and teaching grandchildren and great grandchildren card games. She did not tolerate cheating, but table talk was okay. The Schulstad cabin in Canada was her ideal vacation and retirement place for spending time with family and friends. Bernice also enjoyed reading, crocheting afghans, and was an avid Twins fan.In 1993, Bernice married Roland Olson. They resided in Hawley and spent several winters in Arizona where she made many new friends. Bernice is survived by her two sons and five daughters, Eugene Linda Schulstad, Indianapolis, Paul Earline Schulstad, Willmar, Beverly Robert Imhoff, Lowell, MI, Rebecca Bud Ode, Lake Park, Diane Tony Passanante, Hawley, Lori Verne Peterson, Frazee and Joyce Alan Newton, Hawley, step-sons Larry Ilene Olson, Lake Park and Ronald Corrine Olson, Lake Park, brother Donald Berg, Detroit Lakes, sisters LeVoyne Littlefield, Moorhead and Delaine Sheldon Struble, Lake Park, sisters-in-law Delories Berg, Detroit Lakes and Elaine Schulstad, Mesa. Bernice's extended family included 21 grandchildren and step-grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands Eugene in 1982 and Roland in 2005, and brother, Lester Berg.
