Burton Vernon Eide

Burton Eide, 94, died Thursday, October 1, 2015 with his family by his side at Viking Manor, Ulen, MN. He was born at home on August 5, 1921 to Nels and Minnie Olson Eide. Although he lived in Ulen the past 3 years and in Fertile, MN in 1973/1974, Hitterdal was his home.

Burt attended Hitterdal Public School and started farming on the family farm at the age of 14. He married Esther Temple at Salem church parsonage on November 10, 1943, and continued living on the farm with their 5 children. In addition to being a lifelong farmer, he was a school bus driver, hauled lumber to Tioga, ND, drove gravel truck, owned E&B Market store in Hitterdal and also owned the Top Notch Motel in Fertile. Burt was a lifetime member of Salem Lutheran Church and helped in its construction.

He loved his family and community, always spending time sharing stories, talking politics, current issues, Minnesota Vikings and Twins, and especially loved his cars! In his later years, he spent many hours and miles driving around checking crops and giving Snertie her daily ride.

Burt is survived by his wife, Esther, his 5 children: Linda Robert Erickson, Carrington, ND, Virgil Kitti Eide, Glyndon, MN, Debbie Mylin Cummings, Glyndon, MN, Gwynn Barry Langerud, Hawley, MN, and Pam Rudolf, Glyndon, MN; 12 grandchildren, Jeff LeAnn Cummings, John Erickson, Sheri Jerry Schumann, Steve Tonia Erickson, Jesse Nicole Langerud, Susie Brian Thomas, Jamie Jon Edmunds, Mike Courtney Erickson, Kelly Rudolf, Darrin Eide, Derek Eide, and Casey Rudolf; 24 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law Elizabeth Pederson, Pat Bob Mitchell and Judy Cliff Hahn; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters Eunice Eide and Pearl Richard Melbye; brothers Norman Adeline Eide and Allan Sylvia Eide; firstborn son, Virgil LeRoy and son-in-law Mike Rudolf.

A special thank you to Viking Manor staff for giving dad such compassionate care the past three years, and to Hospice for their service in dad’s final days.

He will be greatly missed by his family and many friends.
