Carl L. Bailey, age 94, of Moorhead, MN, died on Saturday, September 15, 2012, in River Pointe Assisted Living, Moorhead, MN, under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley.Carl Leonard Bailey was born on August 2, 1918, to Frank and Olga Fischer Bailey in Grafton, ND. He grew up and attended school in Grafton, graduating from Grafton high school in 1936. Carl then attended Concordia College in Moorhead from 1936 to1940, receiving his Bachelor of Arts degree in physics. He then attended the University of Minnesota obtaining his Ph. D. in 1947 after an interruption due to World War II. During the war, Carl worked with nuclear weapons development at Los Alamos, NM for four years. Upon returning to Moorhead, Carl was a Professor of Physics at Concordia College from 1947 until retirement in 1988. He was also the Academic Dean at Concordia College from 1954 to 1971. In 1942, Carl married Carol Zank. Carol died in 1970. In 1976, he married June Marks Bailey. Carl was a member of the American Physical Society and the Society of Sigma Xi. He enjoyed hiking, backpacking and camping, archeological digging, reading and painting the Concordia Christmas murals. He also enjoyed skiing, football, baseball and basketball. Carl will be missed dearly by his family and many friends.He is survived by his wife, June Bailey of Moorhead, MN; daughters, Kathleen Timothy Solberg of Minneapolis, MN, Elizabeth John McIntyre of Kansas City, KS and Judi Greg Brown of Pelican Rapids, MN; six grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Carol; son, Christopher Bailey; grandsons, Kevin McIntyre and Matthew Brown; granddaughter, Pamela Norman and brothers, Frank, Gordon and Kenneth Bailey.In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to a scholarship fund of the givers choice at Concordia College.
