Carl was born August 27, 1917 to Theodore and Annie Westburg Johnson in rural Hawley. He grew up and attended school there and in the Dale area. The family later moved to Audubon where he worked with several farmers until he was drafted into the Army in 1941 at the age of 22. Carl served with the 34th Red Bull division in North Africa, Sicily and Italy. After being honorably discharged in late 1945 he moved back to the area and worked for the Becker County Highway Department. On October 1, 1950 he married Marjorie Nelson in Cormorant Township and together they made their home in Lake Park and raised their family. Through the years Carl was very active in the community as a member of the Audubon VFW, Lake Park American Legion, the Audubon/Lake Park Conservation Club, the Boy Scouts, and the Lake Park Garden Club. He also taught gun safety classes and volunteered at the elementary school. He was a proud member of Lake Park Lutheran and served the church for almost 50 years. He will be dearly missed. Carl was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Albert, Ollie, George, Lloyd, Ernie, Roger; and sisters, Hilder Lund, Eleanor Kiehl, Anna Kohler and Charlotte Smith.He is survived by sons, Ted Pam of Red Wing, MN, Tom Anita of Park River, ND; wife of 45 years, Marjorie Johnson; grandchildren, Erica of Fargo, ND, Brett of Park River, ND, Elizabeth of St. Paul, MN; brother, Harold "Smokey"; sisters, Arlene Arlen Restad of Eagan, MN, and Elaine Oss of Elk River, MN; and many nieces and nephews.
