Cathy Thomas

Catherine (Swanson) Thomas, of Moorhead, MN, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 2, at Eventide Senior Living, Moorhead, MN.

Cathy was born June 14, 1931, to Henry and Lea Swanson. She graduated from Moorhead High School and Interstate Business College. On December 29, 1951 she married Aubrey Thomas. They enjoyed 62 loving and adventure filled years together. She loved working in the field with both Aubrey and their son Brian on the farm north of Kragnes. She delighted in the time she spent with her family, especially grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Never one to sit still, she spent a great amount of time in her kitchen baking and could make preparing large, delicious meals look effortless. Her strong faith in God was evident by her generosity and support of the North Buffalo Church. Cathy was loved by all who knew her. Her bigheartedness showed in the amount of time she spent volunteering at North Buffalo Church, VFW, the Sons of Norway and other organizations. Cathy donated over 10 gallons of blood to the United Blood Services and was a breast cancer survivor. Unofficially, she held the record for most lefse made in a lifetime. “Some Grandmas knit; real Grandmas make lefse.” Earlier in her fastpitch softball days she played for the Twinettes that went to Nationals.  They made it to the championship game where they lost, and she had the only hit for the team, a triple.

We will miss her warmth, love and laughter enormously. She is survived by her children, Dodie (Bob) Halvorsen, LuJean Thomas (Greg) Haakenson, Bruce (Jane) Thomas, Brian (Darcy) Thomas; grandchildren, Laura (Paul) Taylor, Jason (Jessamy) Thomas, Thomas Halvorsen, Zoe Halvorsen, Lydia (Norman) Nicholson, Nick Thomas; great-grandchildren, Jade Thomas and Isabelle Taylor. She was preceded in death by her husband, Aubrey; parents, Henry and Lea Swanson, and sister Mary Paeper.

Celebration of life will be held on Saturday, March 10th at North Buffalo Lutheran Church, Moorhead. Visitation at 11 a.m., service at noon followed by a meal.  Interment will be held at North Buffalo Church at a later date.
