Clarence was born August 25, 1912 in Lake Park, MN, to August and Amalia Romare Holmgren. He grew up and attended school in Lake Park and was confirmed and baptized at the Lake Park Lutheran Church. Clarence entered the U.S. Naval Service as a Machinist's Mate with the Seabees in 1943 until 1945, spending most of his time in the Philippine Islands.
