Curtis R. Johnson

Curtis R. Johnson, 60, of Moorhead, MN, passed away on Sunday, May 29, 2022, at home under the care of family and Hospice of the Red River Valley. Curtis was born July 10, 1961, in Fargo, ND, to Conrad and Kathryn (Kost) Johnson. He grew up and attended school in Moorhead before moving to Crookston, MN, where he graduated from Mount Saint Benedict Academy in 1979. On July 20, 1979, Curtis married Gail Snartland. Together they made their home in Moorhead and started a family. He began working for Silverline, then American Crystal Sugar and Solid Comfort before going back to school where he earned his degree from Minnesota State University Moorhead. Over the years, Curtis enjoyed working with Fargo Public Schools where he spent 31 years at Agassiz and Carl Ben Eielson Middle Schools. His true passion was coaching girls volleyball. He was head coach at Shanley High School and was a coach and director of the Fargo South JO program. He was proud to receive the Robert L. Lindsay Meritorious Service Award from USA Volleyball and NDHSCA Coach of the Year Award. Curtis’s biggest achievement was as the head varsity volleyball coach of Shanley High School where they won a State Championship in 2014. He also loved driving his Camaro, Playing classic video games, road trips, and spending time with his family, especially his granddaughters. He will be dearly missed.

Curtis is survived by his wife, Gail; sons, Aaron (Nukun) Johnson and Alex (Crystal) Johnson; granddaughters, Mabel and Millie; brothers, Martin (Janice) Johnson and Maynard (Eileen) Johnson; and sisters-in-law, Carolyn and Myrna Johnson; as well as nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Conrad and Kathryn; brothers, Donald and Allan; and nephew, Maynard “Chip”.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to St. Francis de Sales Church or Mount Saint Benedict Monastery, Foundation, 620 Summit Ave, Crookston, MN 56716. Checks can be made to Sisters of Saint Benedict or MSB Foundation.

The family has requested social distancing and the use of masks. Masks will be provided at church for any guests that are in need.

Visitation will be Monday, from 5 – 7 p.m., followed by a prayer service at 7 p.m., at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, Moorhead, MN.

Mass of Christian Burial will be Tuesday, at 11 a.m., at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, Moorhead, MN.

Interment will follow services at St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery, Moorhead, MN.
