Dale Allan Haakenson, 87, of Fargo, ND, passed away on Wednesday, November 6, 2024, at Bethany on 42nd in Fargo, ND.
Dale was born on November 22, 1936, in Mayville, ND, to Clarence and Clara (Brown) Haakenson. He grew up in Galesburg, ND, where he graduated from Galesburg High School. On March 18, 1955, he married his lifelong friend and love, Ethel Moen, in Clifford, ND. He attended Concordia College in Moorhead, MN, before serving in the U.S. Navy from 1955 to 1957. After his service, he enrolled at the University of North Dakota, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting. Dale later obtained his CPA license while gaining experience at various accounting firms in Fargo. This paved the way for a fulfilling career as the Chief Financial Officer at St. Luke's Hospital, where he ultimately retired.
Following retirement, Dale and Ethel moved fulltime to Rose Lake, MN, where they enjoyed 18 wonderful years before returning to Moorhead in 2010.
Dale had a unique talent for building things designed to last, and showed great ingenuity in his projects. He loved playing card games with the family, such as hand-and-foot and cribbage. He adored animals, especially his cat, Max. He was a patient, loving husband to Ethel, and cared for her tenderly prior to her passing. Dale was known for his kind, even-keeled nature and deep love for his family.
Dale is survived by his children: Lee (Jeff) Anderson, David (Melody) Haakenson, and Susan (Dave) Haarstad; his grandchildren: Jami (Bo), Chris, Garret (Grace), Chelsea (Thomas), Kristin, Mike (Anna), and Heather (Nick); 13 great-grandchildren; sister Nola Satrom; and many other loving relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Ethel; daughters, Beth and Betty; parents, Clarence and Clara; and siblings, Neal, Delores, and Jim.
A private family service will be held. Dale’s final resting place will be at Elm River Cemetery in Galesburg, ND.
