Daniel Murphy, 95, of Fargo, ND passed away on January 12, 2017 at Villa Maria Nursing Home in Fargo, ND. Dan was born on November 16, 1921 in Ada, MN to E.J. and Tessie Buckley Murphy. Dan attended and graduated from Felton High School. He then attended Moorhead State Teachers College for 3 years until he was called to active duty with the Army Air Force during World War II as a Bombardier-Navigator. Dan took part in 54 bombing missions over Germany. On his 54th mission his plane was shot down. He was captured by the Germans and imprisoned for 2 months in a prisoner of war camp. After the war ended he was released and returned to America where he was honorably discharged. Dan returned to Moorhead State to finish his Bachelor’s degree and graduated with a major in English and a minor in Physical Education. He then attended the University of Minnesota where he studied Agriculture as a post graduate program.
Dan taught English at Felton High School until he chose to pursue farming full time. He married Ann Deutsch on April 16, 1955 in Fargo, ND and together they raised 5 children on the family farm. In 1996, Dan and Ann retired to Moorhead and later to Fargo. Dan was a member of the Glyndon Felton school board for several years when his kids were in school. He enjoyed golfing, playing pool and cards. He enjoyed attending MSUM and NDSU football and basketball games. He especially enjoyed spending time with friends and family.
Dan is survived by his wife, Ann; Sons, Dan Laurie Murphy, Michael Madge Murphy, and Joe Ginny Murphy; Daughters, Julie Peter Verstraete Murphy, and Mary Murphy Powers; Grandchildren, Ashley Brandon, Trent, Travis, Patrick, Callie, Rebekah, Marisa, Mariah, Abbey, Danny, and Erin; Great Grand Children, Gabriella, Kenley, Anders, Hayes, and Kenzi; Sister-In-Laws, Katherine Murphy, Mary Harty and many other relatives and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, 7 brothers, and 5 sisters.
Visitation: Thursday, February 2nd from 5-7PM with a prayer service beginning at 7:00PM at Wright Funeral Home in Moorhead, MN
Service: Friday, February 3rd at 11:00AM at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Moorhead, MN
Internment: St Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery following services.
Memorials preferred to American Red Cross.
