Darrel J. Barth, 92, of Hawley, MN, died Wednesday, February 22, 2017, at Sanford Palliative Care in Fargo.
Darrel was born August 6, 1924, in Tyler, ND, to Henry and Elva Burfiend Barth. He graduated from Comstock High School in 1942. In May 1945 he enlisted in the U.S. Army and proudly served in World War II. On June 19, 1948, he was united in marriage to June Logan at Trinity Lutheran Church in Moorhead. In 1948 they purchased a farm in rural Hawley, MN. Darrel farmed for many years and then later became the owner/operator of Hawley Farm Supply for 15 years, during which time he was proud to have brought the first Ski-Doo snowmobile to Hawley. While running his business, he also kept busy as a bus driver for the Hawley School system, and later worked as a rural mail carrier for 10 years. Never one to sit idle, Darrel was still working at the age of 88, doing maintenance for the Hawley Manor. In 2002, Darrel and June built their retirement home at 1543 Sunset Boulevard in Hawley. June passed away on October 26, 2012.
Darrel was very active in his community and Hawley Lutheran Church. He enjoyed weekly card games at the senior centers in Hawley and Barnesville, playing bingo, and attending church functions and dinners at any of the area churches. He loved to play pinochle and participated in many tournaments with his grandson, Matthew, at Loco Daze, Potato Days and Glyndon Days. Known for his giving nature, he loved spending time with family and friends, and enjoyed many activities with his grandchildren over the years.
He is survived by his children, Lana Ardell Whaley, of Hitterdal, MN, Linda Barth, of Moorhead, Gail Greg Utke, of Sioux Falls, SD, Terrie Ken Pompa, of Tucson, AZ, Jeff Carrie Barth, of Glyndon, MN, Jennifer Phil Behrens, of Moorhead, and Jackie Dave Geske, of Moorhead; his brothers, Donald Barth, of Moorhead, and Gerald “Butch” Marge Barth, of Yankton, SD; his sisters, Lorilee Peterman, of Hawley, and Beverly Don Buth, of Moorhead; his sister-in-law, Joni Barth, of FL; 21 grand-children and 22 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, June; his brother, Dwayne “Bud” Barth, and his brother-in-law, Chuck Peterman.
Visitation will be Monday, February 27, 2017 from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. with a prayer service at 7:00 P.M. at Wright Funeral Home in Hawley, MN. The funeral service will be Tuesday, February 28, 2017, at 11:00 A.M., at Hawley Lutheran Church. Interment will be in Hawley Cemetery.
