David Anthony Fitzgerald M.D.

David Anthony Fitzgerald, M.D., 78, of Moorhead, MN, passed away on Saturday, March 28, 2020, in Essentia Health Hospital, Fargo, ND.

David was born on November 12, 1941, to Ivor and Katherine (Hickey) Fitzgerald, in Chicago, Illinois. He grew up in the West Rogers Park neighborhood of Chicago, IL, and later moved to Park Ridge, IL, in the fifth grade. He graduated from high school at Notre Dame College Prep in Niles, Il, where he played the trombone in the Melodons, the renowned jazz band of NDCP. He attended and graduated from Notre Dame University, Notre Dame, Il, with a Bachelor of Arts in 1964. After graduation, he completed his post graduate work at Emory Medical School in Atlanta, Georgia, where he received his medical degree in 1970.

He began his career at Northwestern Hospital in Chicago and worked in several hospitals and clinics in the country as a general neurologist. He worked in Kansas City, KS, Escanaba, MI, Green Bay, WI, and finally settling in Fargo, ND, in 2000 and retiring in 2013.

When David was younger, he loved to sail, ski, and his time spent in Chicago and Lake Michigan. He loved to listen to most types of music but was especially fond of Jazz, his favorites being the musical talents of Keith Jarrett and Dave Brubeck. As a stress reliever, David enjoyed cooking to take his mind off of work. Along with cooking, he had a passion for gardening flowers, vegetables, and herbs, which he’d use to cook many homemade meals. Birdwatching was another of David’s interests and he always made sure the birds that would visit were well fed and would venture on many bird and nature watch walks and hikes. He enjoyed keeping an eye on the farm property where he lived in Moorhead, making repairs, doing handywork, and driving his John Deere tractor. Neurology, his chosen field, was his life’s focus and he had keen interest in infectious disease which helped him diagnose issues others had missed.

David is survived by his wife, Lisa Faulkner; children, Kirsten Fitzgerald, Mia Fitzgerald, Briana Rowland, David Fitzgerald, and Brendan Fitzgerald; grandchildren, Tate, Wyatt, Tara, Ford, and Kira; siblings, Mary Kay Kew and John Fitzgerald; and many other loving relatives and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, Ivor and Katherine; children, Meaghan Van Liew and Shea Fitzgerald; and brother, Daniel.
