David James Warner

October 13, 1941 — September 29, 2022

David James Warner, 80, of Fargo, ND and Surprise, AZ, died September 29, 2022, at Lilac Homes in Dilworth, MN.

David was born October 13, 1941, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Fargo, ND, to John “Jack” and Jessie (Burley) Warner.  He grew up in Felton, MN, was a member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church and graduated from Felton High School in 1959.  After graduation, he followed in his father’s footsteps and began his great love for horseracing.  David owned and raced thoroughbred horses throughout the United States and Canada.  He attended the Kentucky Derby, as well as many others, and enjoyed the many friendships he gained in the world of horse racing. David was also a lifelong farmer, and took over the family farm near Georgetown, MN after his father passed away.  He also took over his dad’s interest in the Country Kitchen at West Acres and later the County Kitchen in Detroit Lakes, MN.

Having traveled much during his lifetime, David fell in love with the state of Arizona and bought a house at Sun City Grand in Surprise, AZ to spend the winters.  He participated in lots of horse racing in Arizona and enjoyed his other great love: golf.  Over the years he won several tournaments and when in Fargo, ND, was always invited to participate in the Roger Maris Tournament.  Other hobbies included fishing in Canada and flying airplanes, a skill he had learned at a rather young age.

Although he never married or had children of his own, David had a special bond with his nieces and nephews and was always known as “Uncle Dave.” He will be remembered for his positive outlook on life, gentle and kind spirit, and generosity towards everyone he met.  David resided for a short time at Eventide in Moorhead in 2018 and then finally at Lilac Homes in Dilworth where he developed a special love for all the people there.

David was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Gloria “Bea” Sharpe; his nephew, Jonathan Brantner, and his brother-in-law, Dean Essen. He is survived by his sisters, June (Jerry) Brantner and Carol Essen, and his 8 loving nieces and nephews.

A memorial gathering will be held on Sunday, October 16, 2022, from 1:00 P.M. to 3:00 P.M. at Wright Funeral Home, Moorhead, MN.
