Delano William "Del" Walby

March 23, 1942 — November 7, 2024

Moorhead, MN, formerly of Bismarck, ND

Delano William “Del” Walby, 82, of Moorhead, MN, formerly of Bismarck, ND, passed away on Thursday, November 7, 2024, at Bethany on 42nd, Fargo, ND, after a brave journey with a debilitating muscle disease, inclusion body myositis.

Del was born on March 23, 1942, to William and Rose (Kinsvater) Walby in Hettinger, ND. He grew up in Bismarck, ND, where he graduated from Bismarck High School in 1960. He enlisted in the Army on June 10, 1960, for six months where he attended basic training. He then enrolled at Bismarck State College before his Army National Guard unit was activated in 1961. He was stationed at Fort Leonard Wood, MI, during the Berlin Crisis for nearly a year. After serving his country, he returned to Bismarck and continued his education at Bismarck State College where he graduated two years later with an associate’s degree. He was united in marriage to Connie Hagel on December 27, 1969, at First Lutheran Church in Bismarck, ND

Del worked various jobs in the Bismarck area before enrolling at NDSU where he graduated with his bachelor’s degree in business. He worked at various jobs after his graduation before reenlisting in the North Dakota National Guard, where he was largely involved in data processing. He retired from his position in 2002 at the age of 60. He lived in Bismarck until 2014 before moving to Moorhead, MN, where he has lived ever since.

Del was a proud citizen of Bismarck, ND, and a lifelong member of First Lutheran Church, faith being a very important virtue in his life. He enjoyed going to car shows and looking at the sports cars and enjoyed grabbing a coke and going for a long drive in his convertible. These drives were commonly known to his family as a “coke run”. He also enjoyed reading and watching movies, specifically anything action packed. Most importantly, he loved being together with his family. He enjoyed many vacations, his top trips include Hawaii, Alaska, and his most recent trip to Sanibel Island.

Del is survived by his loving wife, Connie; children, Alesha Walby and Damon (Elizabeth) Walby; grandchildren, Annabelle, Emmie, and Lilia Walby; sisters, Delores Schock and Doreen (Wally) VanSickle; and many other loving relatives and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, William and Rose; brother Doug (Lillian) Walby; and brother-in-law, Loren Schock.
