Delores Swanson, 90, Moorhead, MN, died in her home at River Pointe on January 10, 2022.
Delores Eyvonne Gabrielson was born January 27, 1931 in Hillsboro, ND to Gustav and Pauline (Nelson) Gabrielson. She grew up on the family farm and graduated from Hillsboro High School in 1949. On June 29, 1952 she married Donald Swanson and after patiently waiting for children for over 10 years, they lovingly adopted their son, Randy, in 1961 and their daughter, Lori, in 1962. Delores worked in bookkeeping for Moorhead Plumbing and MSUM Bookstore which she retired from in 1996. When her husband, Don, opened Don’s Grocery on 7th Avenue South in Moorhead and later Don’s 8th St. Market in Fargo, Delores kept the books for him, too. Don passed away on June 22, 2015.
Family and friends meant the world to Delores, and nothing topped spending time with her grandchildren. She lived for playing cards, especially blackjack, pinochle and whist, and she enjoyed trips to the casino to play the slot machines. Her dear friends at River Pointe, Katie, Lou and George, meant so much to her and she cherished the memories they built around the card table. She also loved reading, gardening, baking, puzzles and word games. In her younger years, she was a fantastic bowler, and took home many trophies to prove it.
Delores will be deeply missed by all who knew her. She had a one-of-a-kind, tough, feisty spirit, a unique sense of humor, a generous love for her family and friends and she lived all her days to the fullest.
She is survived by her son, Randy (Dee Hanson) Swanson, Cosmos, MN; daughter, Lori (Ed) Pachel, Audubon, MN; grandchildren, Brandon, Carissa, Eric, Amber, Ashli, Jordan and Kamryn; 10 great-grandchildren; sister, Pearl Simunds, Fargo, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, George, Chester, Gilmer, Earl, Everett and Curtis, and her beloved husband, Don.
Visitation will be Monday, January 17, 2022, from noon to 1:00 P.M., followed by the funeral service at 1:00 P.M. at The Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd in Moorhead. Masks will be required at the service. The service will be livestreamed for those unable to attend. Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens.
