Dolores Louise Philippot, age 87, of Fargo, ND, formally of Moorhead, MN, passed away on Dec. 5, 2023, in Tucson, AZ, holding the hand of a dear friend while listening to loving words from her family. Up until the day she died, she was laughing and looking forward to the next festive party where she could be with people she enjoyed.
Born in Winnipeg, Canada, Dolores described herself as quite shy when she was young. Even so, she always embraced time with her family, especially when bonding with her mother and favorite aunts. As she grew, she blossomed, beginning with an early job as a grade school teacher before meeting the love of her life, René, whom she married in 1957. From there, she found her voice as a steadfast wife and devoted mother to her three children. When René’s company transferred him to Fargo in 1971, Dolores’s talents as a worker outside of the home also bloomed, notably as a bookkeeper at the Newman Center on the campus of Moorhead State and later, as the co-owner of F-M Pack-and-Ship with René. Dolores expressed her creativity by painting, beading, and bedazzling, and she was always up for a spirited game, usually involving a deck of cards.
Whether standing behind a counter, sitting in a circle of chairs at home, greeting a neighbor, or socializing with a group of friends, one of Dolores’s greatest pleasures was to hear people’s stories, often prompting others with the words “So, what’s new?” She relished all kinds of gatherings that brought conversation, good food and drink, and slightly saucy jokes. Her joy increased when she engaged in these assemblages in one of her favorite places: at her Toad Lake home, at snowbird destinations in Texas and Arizona, in the Rocky Mountains of the U.S.A. and Canada, and in her home province of Manitoba.
A devout Catholic, Dolores faithfully worshipped. Even when her health or issues in the world made it difficult, she found ways to be present for her local diocese, attending mass in person or virtually, completing daily devotions, and volunteering when she was able. She took great pride her consistency and in befriending the priests, nuns, and other church staff.
Beyond all else, Dolores loved her family. She wanted nothing more than to be surrounded by them, listening to their accounts of the world, watching them engage in activities, and sharing sustenance of all kinds. When René died in 2018, she lost her best friend and life partner, and even when she was smiling, she carried a sadness. Now, she is with him in peace and without pain. Though we celebrate their reunion, we will miss her every day on Earth.
Dolores is predeceased by her beloved husband, René, and her parents, Theresa and Joseph Vandaele. She is survived by her children, Jackie Philippot; René Philippot, Jr. (Susan) and their children, Nicole, Carly, and Zach (Maddy); Raymond Philippot (Donna); sister-in-law Jeanette Lambert (Marcel); brother, Charlie (Bonnie), cherished extended family members, and countless friends.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, May 25, 2024, at 10:00 AM with a visitation from 9:30-10:00 at Nativity Catholic Church, Fargo, ND.
Final resting place will be in the Columbarium at St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery, Moorhead, MN.
