Donald C. Day

Donald Clifford Day was born near Lake Park, MN, on June 13, 1922 to Earl and Maude Comstock Day. He graduated from high school in Hitterdal in 1938. He worked on farms in the Hawley area until 1941, when he went to work for the Northern Pacific Railroad in the communications and signal department. He moved to Montana with the railroad in 1944. He married Geneva Luddington in 1945. They divorced in 1997. Geneva died in 1999. Don worked for the railroad until his retirement in 1983. He lived in Ravalli, Montana from 1952 to 1997, where they owned and operated the local general store. At age 71, Don joined the Peace Corps. He served in the Corps for 2 ½ years, stationed in Paraguay, South America, where he taught agriculture to the natives. He moved back to Hawley in 1997. He met Kathryn Roehrich in 1998 and they were inseparable until he fell ill last fall. Don was baptized in the Lord by Tom Holtey, Chaplain HRRV, in February 2007. He was preceded in death by his parents; and 2 sisters, Lucille Wenthin and Maxine Chalfant, of Hawley, MN. Don is survived by his children, Jeanette Heberle, Great Falls, MT, Marcia Harris and Steve Day, both of Ravalli, MT; four grandsons, five great-grandchildren, and three step-grandchildren; one brother, Bill Harriet Day, Hawley, MN; several niece and nephews; and his beloved companion, Kathryn Roehrich and her family. The family wishes to thank Hospice of the Red River Valley for all their care and comfort the last five months. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to be sent to Hospice of the Red River Valley, Fargo, North Dakota.
