Donald C. Wold

December 6, 1929 — May 20, 2018

Donald C. Wold, 88, of Moorhead, MN died Sunday, May 20 at Essentia Health in Fargo, ND.

Donald was born December 6, 1929 to Clarence and Helga (Magnuson) Wold. After graduating from Roseau High School, Don enlisted in the US Air Force and served during the Korean Conflict. Don graduated from the Brown Institute of Technology and earned his first-class license in communication. His extensive knowledge in electronics and communication served him well.

He began his career by working for several manufacturing and technology firms in the Minneapolis area. In 1964 he began his 30-year career with the Northern Pacific Railroad, now Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad. He helped incorporate all the advances in communication from land line telephone and telegraph to the vast microwave and modern systems that are in use today.

Don took pride in his work and was known to be a perfectionist in all that he did. He was an avid reader, excellent woodworker, and he enjoyed traveling. He and Carol went on many fun and memorable trips after his retirement.

His other great passion was flying. He earned his private pilot’s license at age 16 and told colorful stories of his many aeronautical adventures. He loved sport flying and owned a beautiful yellow and blue Aeronca Chief Airplane until his eyesight failed and he could no longer fly. For many years, Don was a member of the Experimental Aircraft Association. With his family and friends, he made over 25 camping trips to the Annual EAA Fly-in and convention in Oshkosh, WI.

Donald Wold and Carol (Larson) were married on June 27, 1959 in Bemidji, MN. They began their married life in Minneapolis, MN. Several career transfers and moves later, they settled in Moorhead, MN in 1968 and raised their family. He led and helped in the Cub Scouts and the 4-H Club during the years when his children were members. He mentored and assisted his boys in building prize winning Pine Wood Derby cars, model airplanes and rockets. He even designed and built an electronic finish line for the Pine Wood Derby.

Don was a 50 member of the American Legion Post #2, Fargo, ND, Sons of Norway, Kringen Lodge #25, a Past Master of Sunrise Lodge #130, Fargo, ND, a 50 year member of El Zagel Shrine, Fargo, ND, and Past Patron x 6 of the Moorhead Chapter #164, Order of the Eastern Star, Moorhead, MN. He also served on the Supervisory Committee and Board of Directors of the United Savings Credit Union.

He will be remembered as a great friend as well as a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather. He will be dearly missed.

Donald is survived by his wife; children, John Wold, Ann Fulgham, David (Becca) Wold, and Steven (Gillian Grissom) Wold; grandchildren, Jared Kuehl, Austin Fulgham, Danielle Fulgham, Alex (Samantha) Fulgham and Samantha Fulgham; siblings, Clarice (Orlean) Webster Johnson, Ivan (Barbara) Wold, Elaine (Ray) Anderson, Eloise (Dennis) Sobtzak, Gary (Jane) Wold and Diane (Bruce) Tolzmann; and many nieces and nephews.
