Donald Eugene “Don” Doty

Donald Eugene Doty, 79, of Moorhead, MN, formerly of Hawley, MN, passed away on Friday, July 26, 2019, at Bethany Homes, Fargo, ND.

Don was born on July 1, 1940, to Leo and Rachel (Morrison) Doty. He grew up in Ogema, MN, where he attended school and graduated from Waubun High School in 1958. He attended Technical School in Thief River Falls and later entered the U.S. Army in 1960. He was honorably discharged in 1962 and then spent several years in the National Guard. He began employment with Sturdevant’s in Moorhead and later managed their new store in Hawley. Don became employed with the Minnesota Department of Transportation in 1969 in Detroit Lakes, MN, later, transferring to the Dilworth truck station and then to the Hawley truck station of MnDOT from which he retired.

Don was married to Jean Thompson on October 26, 1963 in Hawley, MN. They made their home there for 50 years and raised their children, Leah and Wade. In 2013 they downsized to Moorhead, MN.

Don and Jean spent several winters on the Alabama Gulf Coast at Orange Beach and learned to appreciate the southern lifestyle. They made trips to Europe, Hawaii, and Alaska.

Don enjoyed baseball, hunting, and fishing. He was a self-taught gunsmith and held a federal firearms license. He enjoyed buying, selling, and repairing firearms. He began his business, “The House of Remington” in his home and eventually built, “The Shop” where he and his customers had many good visits. He was a member of The Dakota Territories Gun Collectors Association and regularly attended gun shows.

Don is survived by his wife, Jean; son, Wade (Tina) Doty, Alexandria, MN; daughter, Leah (Brad) Hanson, Audubon, MN; precious grandsons, Peyton Doty and Christian Hanson; sister, Leola Davidson, Maddock, ND; brother-in-law, Glen Lougheed, Fargo, ND; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by his parents, Rachel and Leo; sister, Doris Lougheed; and infant brother, Ronald Doty.

Visitation will be from 12:00 P.M. to 1:00 P.M., followed by the memorial service at 1:00 P.M. on Friday, August 2, 2019, at Messiah Lutheran Church, Fargo, ND. Final resting place will be at Lysne Lutheran Church Cemetery at a later date.

Memorial preferred to Messiah Hour of Worship, St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, or donor’s choice.
