Donald H. Nelson

Donald Heigg was born on February 26, 1929, in his home near Hitterdal to Jerome and Alma Heigg Nelson. He was baptized and confirmed at Highland Grove Lutheran Church. In 1948, he graduated from Hitterdal High School. Donald served in the Army from 1953-1955, where he was stationed in Georgia. On February 26, 1954 he married Lorraine Nodsle at Eksjo Lutheran Church, Lake Park, MN. After returning from the Army, Donald worked at Sellin Brothers Construction, H & L Oil Company and the City of Hitterdal. From 1967-1981 he managed the Hitterdal Elevator. In 1983 they moved into town from the farm. Donald worked at the Ulen-Hitterdal School as a custodian and bus driver, until retirement in 2002. Donald was a very active member in his community. He served on the council at Highland Grove Lutheran Church. In 2008, he became a member of Salem Lutheran Church. He was a charter member of the Hitterdal Lion's Club. Donald was also a member of the Hitterdal American Legion and the Go Getters. He served on the school board for Ulen-Hitterdal Schools. In 2003, Donald was awarded the Clay County outstanding citizen award. He is survived by his wife, Lorraine, Hitterdal, MN; daughters, Renee Jerry Waller, Glyndon, MN and Laurie Wolfswinkel, Hitterdal, MN; four granddaughters, Tracy Ryan Kessel, Ashley Waller Matt Johnk, Jennifer and Casie Wolfswinkel; four great-grandchildren, Peyton, Reis and Drew Kessel, and Brennan Johnk; sister, Margaret Joe Burkhardsmeir, West Fargo, ND; sister-in-law, Valborg Schmieg, Moorhead, MN. He is preceded in death by his parents; son, Ron; and brother, Carl.
