Dorothy Elizabeth Sanders (92) peacefully went to Heaven on February 23 in Sanford’s Hospice Unit. She is now with James, her favorite man and husband of 69 years. When Alzheimer’s forced a move to Eventide at Fairmont, she continued to miss the home he had built for them. She had grown up on that very same land, working on the family vegetable farm. That is where she raised her two boys, Jim and David, and spent time daily with her neighbor and brother Merle and his wife Georgia.
Besides her family, here are a few of her favorite things:
Her gardens and house plants – even strangers would marvel at her green thumb. The color red, particularly in geraniums and blouses. Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, so conveniently located across the street before their big move further south. Baking brownies for her boys and their friends and hundreds more pans throughout the years. Dancing! Dorothy and James danced in roller skates, did the waltz and polka, and loved square dancing – and they were good! Animals, especially cats. And finally, Dorothy loved malts from the Moorhead Dairy Queen.
She will be missed by her family still here on earth: Jim (Vonnie) and David (Cora); Jim’s children: Janelle (Keith) Steinberg and Carissa (Tony) Stauss; and David’s children: Michael (Megan), Molly (Andy) Taylor, Geneviv, Geraldine, and Gershon; and nine great grandchildren.
The family is especially grateful to the staff at Fairmont, Charles Clement (now in Heaven), Sherry Erickson, and Linda Schjelderup for loving her with us to the end.
