Dorothy Hazel Mathre, age 92, passed away at the Eventide Nursing Home, Moorhead, MN, on August 12, 2007. She was born May 14, 1915 in Kendall County, Illinois, to the late Hans and Dorothea Matteson. She was baptized and confirmed at Grace Lutheran Church, rural Morris, IL. She graduated from Bushnell Country School, and from Morris Community High School in 1933. On September 30, 1936 she married William P. Mathre at Grace Lutheran Church, rural Morris.Hazel worked for 26 years as a sales clerk for Phipps Department Store and later and Spurgeon's Department Store as a clerk and head of the dry goods department. She retired in 1979. She was an excellent seamstress and was known for the many hardanger pieces she made as well as the hundreds of Barbie Doll clothes that she sewed.Hazel was an active member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church. She was president of the Bethlehem LCW for over 20 years. She was the Mission Aid treasurer for several years, a member of the Esther Circle, sang in Bethlehem's Senior choir, belonged to a quilting group, and was a faithful participant of the Tuesday morning Bible study group. She also served as president of the Illinois District Women's Missionary Federation. Hazel was also active in volunteer work at the Morris hospital as information desk receptionist for 20 years. Her life revolved around her church and serving her lord.In 2004, after living 89 years in Kendall and Grundy Counties, she moved to Catered Living at Eventide, Moorhead, Minnesota. She made many new friends and was active in worship, Bible study, a book club, as well as attending many events at Eventide. In late 2006, she moved to Heritage Court of the Eventide nursing home and continued to be active there.She is survived by her son, Rev. Wesley Carole Mathre, Moorhead, MN; daughter-in-law, Dee Ann Mathre, Gladstone, OR; two granddaughters, Stevie Mathre, Fargo, ND, and Rachel Mathre, St. Paul, MN; two grandsons, Eric Shelly Mathre, Woodward, Iowa, and Steve Jessica Mathre, Molalla, OR; one sister-in-law, Marjorie Mathre, Helmar, IL; five great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; plus many nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband William; sons, Raymond and Donald; and her five brothers, LeeRoy, Glenn, Arthur, Merle, and Russell.
