Douglas Mark Fergen, 69, Northfield, formerly Moorhead, MN died at his home in Northfield April 11, 2020.
Doug was born in Fargo, ND on December 28, 1950 to Joyce (Boettcher) and Vic Fergen. He was the oldest of 5 siblings.
In 1958 the family moved to Moorhead where Doug spent most of the rest of his life.
He graduated from Moorhead High School in 1969, proud to be a member of the first graduating class of the “new” high school. After high school, Doug worked alongside his dad at Vic’s Superette and studied journalism at Moorhead State University. The lure of the road called him to Wyoming and Colorado for a while but always found his way back to Moorhead.
After returning, he worked odd jobs including painting houses. His eye for detail and smooth hand made him a natural.
Doug loved all sports and coached his youngest brother’s (winning) youth baseball team for 5 years. He could (and would) still recite stats from that team.
A true outdoorsman, he hunted, fished, listened to country music and loved his dogs, Hannah and Queenie. His favorite place to fish was Itasca State Park (now that he’s gone I can share where he caught all of the fish he bragged about).
From 1994-2007 he owned and operated Vic’s Bar and Grill. In his spare time he could be found watching sports in his oversized, heated garage.
Thank God it was heated because he loved to talk about the weather and complain about how cold it was up there.
Doug also loved hosting his family in that garage. He kept us together and we loved him for that.
During the summer of 2019 his health declined rapidly. In September he moved to Northfield, MN to be closer to his sister and her family.
Doug was preceded in death by his parents and is survived by his brothers, Scott (Daniella), Cape Coral FL, Chris (Mary Ann), Timnath CO, Terry (Haley), Bedford TX and sister, Connie (Todd) Menssen, Northfield MN; nieces and nephews, Matt, Ryan, Joe, Cole, Lucy, Clara, Nick and Nina, and beloved dog Queen B.
Doug will be laid to rest in a private ceremony at Riverside Cemetery in Moorhead.
There will be a gathering of friends and family from 11 until noon, with a time for sharing at 11:30, on Wednesday, July 29, 2020, in Wright Funeral Home, Moorhead.
