Douglas W. Faus

November 14, 1927 — January 29, 2012

Douglas "Doug" Wayne Faus began his journey in life in Detroit Lakes on November 14, 1927 and passed away quietly at his daughter's home in Moorhead on Sunday morning, January 29, 2012 at the age of 84 with his family by his side. Son of Leslie Faus and Alice Johnson Jegtvig, Doug was raised on his grandparent's farm south of Lake Park along with his uncles Wallace and Gilbert. His favorite uncle, Wallace, was like a father to him since he never really knew his birth father.Doug met Marlene, his wife of 61 years, in Detroit Lakes, MN. They were married on August 12, 1950.Doug worked many jobs in those first years struggling to support his family. At one point he worked for Barton & Sons which took his family to Arkansas and Kansas before coming back and finally settling down in Moorhead; where they raised their daughter Linda and son Donald.Doug worked for Leo Johnson Furniture Co., followed by his job at Kegel Sign Company where he eventually retired at the age of 65. But retirement didn't stop his time in his garage. We said he was the ultimate shade tree mechanic.Doug's favorite pastime was spending time in his garage. You also could always find a Ford F-150 pickup in his driveway. His pride and joy outside of his family was the 1979 Ford pickup he had converted into a wrecker. He would come to the aid of any of his friends, including his grandson one snowy evening. Doug was blessed with many "car" buddies; you could typically find him on a Saturday afternoon at Al's Auto Parts in Glyndon wandering the yard looking for a used part which always included a few hours of conversation with Al. One of those car buddies, Jeff Jones, always called Doug to check up on him and chat. Doug's love of pickups and cars provided him with hours of joy whether it was doing body work, painting or a tune up getting them ready for a new owner. Nothing made Doug happier than finding a Ford pickup that needed some tender loving care before finding its new owner. He was a true Mr. Fixit-Do-It-Yourself man; we figured he could do just about anything. He loved tractor pulls, racing in the old days, Ernest Tubb and Sunday morning polka music on the radio. Doug was a quiet gentle man who never said a whole lot but listened. He always put his family first and was a good friend to those who knew him. A few years ago Doug found that he had a sister Barbara, who was living in AZ. They were able to meet and since that initial contact have always kept in touch. It was very special for both of them since he only had brothers and she only had a sister. A special thank you to the very caring staff at Hi Acres Manor in Jamestown where Doug would only spend a short time, to the doctors, nurses and CNA's at Jamestown Regional Medical Center who also helped us find comfort for Doug and to help bring him back to Moorhead. Also thank you to the very special people of Hospice of the Red River Valley who worked so quickly get Doug home with his family and provide the kind of comfort care to him and his family that they are known for. Also to Dee his daughter-in-law for her loving care and support in his last few days.Doug is survived by his wife, Marlene; daughter, Linda Laske, Moorhead; son, Donald Dee Faus Dilworth, grandchildren, Shayne Laske, Misty Matt Saltzman, Moorhead, Jacqui Stuart Kegel, Fargo, Christina and Brian; sister, Barbara Bill Walton, Paradise Valley, AZ; brothers, Virgil Becky Jegtvig, Glyndon and Merle Lori Jegtvig, Hawley; nieces and nephews, cats, Buddy and Scooter, and so many friends who loved him. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Anna and Anton Johnson; his birth father, Leslie Faus; mother, Alice Jegtvig; step-father, Harry Jegtvig; and brothers Russell and Jerome Jegtvig .
