Douglas W. Wermager, 79, ended his fight with melanoma on April 23, 2016, surrounded by his family at his home in Lake Park, MN.
Douglas Wayne was born on November 7, 1936, in Waubun, MN, to Odin and Nora Buchholz; their eighth child of nine. He graduated from Twin Valley High School in 1956. Doug worked in Montana for the Forest Service before enlisting in the U.S. Army in 1957. While on leave, he met RuDella Nelson. They married on October 16, 1959 in Lake Park.
Doug worked construction and later owned and operated a local business, Wermager Oil Co. while raising their children. He was a member of the American Legion, school board, and served as a city councilman. Doug and his brother Roger developed Wermager Beach on Big Cormorant in the 1970’s. He was an avid fisherman, hunter and outdoorsman. Doug had an incredible sense of humor and work ethic.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, RuDella Wermager, Lake Park; two sons, Greg Diane, Lafayette, CO, and Paul Cheryl, Nisswa, MN; daughter, Susan David Harris Buckeye, AZ; five grandchildren, Tonya, Ben, Korey, Wyatt and Shane; one great-grandchild, Tayton; sisters, Helen Duane Malmskog, Flom, MN; Janice Chaney Mickelson, Twin Valley, MN; and brother, Don Jeannie Buffalo, MN.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and three sisters.
Visitation: Tuesday, April 26, from 5:00 – 6:30 p.m. with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m. in Wright Funeral Home, Hawley, MN.
Funeral: Wednesday, April 27, at 11:00 a.m. in Lake Park Lutheran Church, Lake Park, MN.
Interment: Lake Park Cemetery, Lake Park, MN.
