Duane B. Westlund

Duane B. Westlund, 88 of Lake Park, MN, passed away on Monday, July 16, 2018 at Ecumen, Detroit Lakes, MN.

Duane Bradford Westlund was born on March 22, 1930 to Albert and Alice (Teigen) Westlund and was the oldest of six children.  He attended District 10 School and was baptized and confirmed at Parke Lutheran Church, rural Hawley, MN.

In 1948, Duane began working in construction and in 1949 moved to South Dakota to work on the Ft. Randall Dam.  On September 6, 1950 Duane married Deloris Brevik and together they had five children.

He operated the Mobil gas station in Lake Park from 1958-1960 then returned to working construction.  In 1971, Duane was appointed as the Business Agent for the Operating Engineers Local 49. In 1974, he began a career driving truck.  He met Penny Erickson and they were married on December 20, 1978.  Penny would often go trucking with Duane.  They loved traveling together and visited 44 states including Alaska.  They became “snowbirds”, spending 27 winters between Texas, Florida and eventually purchasing a home in Arizona.  Penny passed away on March 11, 2015.

Duane is survived by his five children, Byrun Westlund, Roger (Kathy) Westlund, Roberta Olson, Darwin (Vickie) Westlund and Becky (Dan) Schoonhoven; step-children, Pixie (Loren) Jetvig, Timothy Erickson and Tamara Marvig; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; brothers, Marvin (Margie) Westlund and Dick (Arlette) Westlund and sisters, Arvilla West and Phyllis (Merle) Sagen.  He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Ardis Syvertson, and sons-in-law, Ernie Olson and E.F. Dump.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, July 25, 2018 at 2:00 PM with a visitation beginning at 1:00 PM in Wright Funeral Home, Hawley, MN.
