Earl A. Stein, Jr., 87, Moorhead, MN, died on Wednesday, June 3, 2020, in his home in Moorhead.
Earl Arnold Stein, Jr., was born on September 1, 1932, in Fargo, ND, to Earl and Leone (Henschke) Stein. He grew up in Fargo, graduating from Fargo Central High School in 1950 before attending and graduating from Concordia College, Moorhead in 1954.
Earl married Kathryn Lorvig on June 5, 1954, at Starbuck, MN. He served in the U.S. Navy on a ship for two years out of San Francisco, CA. He also served in the Naval Reserves for many years, retiring as a Lt. Commander.
Following his service, they moved to Moorhead where he went to work with his father at Stein Paint and Glass, which became Stein Chemical in 1964 and later Stein’s Inc. Earl retired in 1995. He had served the community on the boards of the MeritCare Hospital, United Way, and the Board of Regents at Concordia College.
Earl bled maroon and gold for the Concordia Cobbers and was a faithful athletics fan. He also followed his grandchildren’s athletics. He enjoyed golf, fishing and hunting. He and Kathy spent several winters in Palm Springs, CA, and then had a home in Peoria, Arizona for 9 years. They also had many summers at Bad Medicine Lake.
Earl is survived by his wife, Kathryn, Moorhead, MN; sons Craig and Kevin (Jane), Moorhead; daughter Lisa (Keith) Schmitz, Keller, TX; sister Donna (Dave) Eriksen, Wesley Chapel, FL; grandchildren Lindsay (Jeremy), Kelsey (Matt), Matthew, Lizzy, Kate, Kendra, Zach; and great grandson, Jett.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and grandsons Michael and Ben.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to The Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd and www.benshelpinghand.com.
A private memorial service will be held on Friday, June 12, 2020 in The Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd.
