Edgar A. Haugstad, 92, Moorhead, MN, passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 22, 2015, at Eventide Lutheran Home, Moorhead, MN.
Edgar was born on January 18, 1923, near Cummings, ND, to Albert and Mabel Amundson Haugstad. He grew up and attended both Bingham and Nielsville schools prior to graduating from Caledonia high school in 1940. He was baptized and confirmed in Salem Lutheran Church, Cummings, ND. He worked on area farms before entering the U.S. Army in 1945, serving in Japan in the 11th Airborne division. As a paratrooper, he made many jumps on foreign land and stateside.
Upon his return from serving our country, he began working as a driver for a fuel company in Moorhead.
Edgar married Lorraine G. Hanson on June 22, 1952 in Nielsville, MN, and they made their home in Moorhead. They celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary last summer. He retired in 1983 as a highly skilled welder repair man and provided service to many customers.
Edgar was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion in Moorhead. In addition to his military service, he was especially proud to have traveled on the Honor Flight to Washington D.C. with his wife. He volunteered his time with the Helping Hands at the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd in Moorhead and Friends of the Carpenter at Atonement Lutheran Church in Fargo. During his time with the Helping Hands group, the City of Moorhead honored them for building numerous handicap ramps for families and residents in Moorhead. Many of his lifelong friends were fellow volunteers and in bible study groups.
He was an avid baseball fan and played first base on several teams throughout high school, in the army and back home. He was always athletic and practiced the art of karate, achieving the rank of a brown belt.
Edgar also gave of himself as a universal blood donor. When called upon to donate under emergency circumstances, he never hesitated. He was honored by United Blood Services for exceeding donations over 10 gallons during his lifetime.
Edgar is survived by his wife Lorraine, Moorhead; sons Richard Peggy, Fargo, and Jeffrey Leslie, Moorhead; daughters Rebecca Steve Malme, Singapore, and Jane Johnson, Moorhead; sister Lea Dell, Moorhead; grandchildren Dallas Sarah Demarais, Chelsey Malme, Peter Ruth Haugstad, Kristi Mike Baukol, and Tori Nate Rerick Okoye; five great grandchildren, Ava, Adelynn, Kaiya, Ryan, and Kylie.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Robert, Vernon and James.
Visitation: Wednesday, February 25, 2015, from 4:00 P.M. until 6:00 P.M. in Wright Funeral Home, Moorhead, MN, as well as one hour before the funeral in the church.
Funeral: Thursday, February 26, 2015, 1:30 P.M. in Atonement Lutheran Church, Fargo, ND.
Interment: Salem Cemetery, Cummings, ND.
