Edna Violette Anderson was born on December 2, 1907, the fourth of seven children of Conrad and Annie Clemetson Brand at Goodrich, North Dakota. The family later moved to Clay County in Minnesota, then into Hawley in 1922, where Edna graduated from Hawley High School in 1926. She attended the then Moorhead State Teachers College for one year, received her teacher's certificate there, and taught school for seven years in Clay County. On June 1st, 1934, at Houglum Lutheran Church, Edna was joined in marriage with Clifford Anderson, and together they farmed southwest of Lake Park. In the middle 1940's Edna returned to teaching for three-and-a-half years, this time in rural Becker County. In 1973, Clifford retired from farming, the couple moved into Lake Park, and Edna worked as a nurse's aide at Sunnyside Care Center for several years, and also at the Lake Park Cafe. On July 29, 1989, after 55 years of marriage, Clifford passed away. Edna was active in Houglum Sunday School, Houglum Ladies Aid, Houglum Quilters, the Farmers Union Organization, and, for 30 years, the Cormorant Homemakers Club. She moved to Hawley in 1991, residing first at the Northside Terrace Apartments, and later at Hawley Manor Assisted Living. In 2005 she moved to the Viking Manor in Ulen, Minnesota. On Tuesday evening, June 27th, Edna passed into the loving arms of her Savior, to claim her heavenly reward from Him whom she had joyfully served in her 98 years on this earth. She was preceded in death by her parents, sisters Mabel and Ethel, and brothers Werner, Clarence, Alvin, and Irvin. She leaves to mourn her, nephews Clifford Gilbertson and Roger Gilbertson, nieces Kathy Morton and Elizabeth Devine, a number of great-nieces and great-nephews, and a host of special friends and church family who loved her very much and will miss her greatly. Edna was a soft-spoken, kind and generous woman with a sweet disposition and a wonderful sense of humor. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends, playing Yahtzee and Scrabble and quilting at Houglum. Godspeed, Edna, on your journey home!
