Edwin J. Oberlander

Edwin “Ed” Oberlander, age 85, of Moorhead, MN, passed away May 23, 2020 at Sanford Medical Center, Fargo, ND.

Ed was born on June 26, 1934 in Cokato Township, Logan County, North Dakota, the son of Adam and Christina (Wanner) Oberlander. He was raised in the rural Logan County area, northeast of Napoleon, ND. He moved to Lenton Township, southwest of Jamestown with his parents in 1943. He graduated from Jamestown High School in 1953. He married Dorothy Ann Groven on February 18, 1961 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Moorhead, MN. They made their home in Moorhead. They have two children, Cheryl and Timothy.

Ed served in the United States Army, where he was stationed in Hawaii.

He worked for many years at Carstensen’s Machine Shop, The Fargo Forum and Lutheran Church of the Good Shepard, Moorhead, where he was the church custodian.

Ed was a man of many hobbies. He enjoyed building and creating things. In his free time, he could be found woodworking, cross stitching, cooking, and gardening.

He was devoted to his wife, Dorothy, tirelessly caring for her and their home. He loved spending time with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Ed was calming, nurturing and compassionate, always finding the good in everyone. He will be greatly missed by his wife, children, and grandchildren.

Ed is survived by his wife, Dorothy, Moorhead; one daughter, Cheryl Dewald (Randy Silver), Fargo; one son, Tim, Moorhead; his grandchildren, Elizabeth (Andy) Lerud, Jessica (Michael) Stecher; and great-grandchildren, Beckham Stecher, Carter Lerud, Maya Stecher, all of Fargo; his sister, Helen Burleson, Jamestown, his brother, Larry Oberlander, Penn Valley, CA.

Ed was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Alvin, Theo, Walter, Otto; sisters, Mary Haid, Emma Bellon, Frieda Carstensen, Esther Pfeifle and father and mother-in-law, Theodore and Alma Groven.

A memorial service with full military honors will be held on Friday, August 21, 2020 at 11:00 AM at Fargo National Cemetery.
