Elda Lewis, 97, Moorhead, died Monday, Jan. 1, in Eventide, Moorhead.
Elda Ulinka (Johnk) (Neuschwander) Lewis was born May 7, 1920, on a farm south of Sabin, MN, to Fred and Marie (Kuehl) Johnk; she was the tenth of thirteen children. She attended Onan Country School, rural Sabin, MN.
On June 6, 1959, Elda married Donald “Duck” Neuschwander at Trinity Lutheran Church, Sabin. The couple made their home in Sabin until Duck passed away October 8, 1972. Elda moved to Moorhead, where, in 1985, she married Lawrence Lewis. Lawrence died in 1991.
Elda cared deeply about her family and was known throughout her lifetime as being a loving, caring aunt to her many nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews. The children who visited Elda’s home often didn’t want to leave. She’d bring out her favorite toys, teach and play card games and bake for them favorite bars and treats. To most of the world, Elda presented as shy and soft-spoken. Those close to her understood she had a playful sense of humor and quick-wit.
She is survived by a brother, Lester Johnk, Sabin, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her two husbands; 11 siblings and her parents.
A visitation will be held on Friday, January 5, 2018, from 10:00 – 11:00 AM followed by a funeral service at 11:00 AM at Trinity Lutheran Church, Sabin, MN.
Burial will be in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, Sabin.
