Eldred “Bud” Ode

Eldred “Bud” Ode, age 77, passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 29, 2020.

Bud was born on May 8, 1943 in Detroit Lakes, MN, to Eivind and Myrtle (Kohler) Ode. He was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Audubon, MN. Bud attended school in Lake Park, MN, graduating in 1961. Bud participated in football, basketball, track, and baseball.

On December 22, 1963 he married Rebecca Schulstad. They made their home in Lake Park. Bud bought land on Hwy 10 and Cty 5 and built his own business named “Bud’s Sport Center” which he owned and operated for 42 years. He made many friendships and was proud of being able to serve 2nd generations of customers. During that time, Bud was on the City Council for 9 years, coached boys’ basketball for 11 years, and played softball until he was 62, all while keeping up with his grandkids’ activities. After selling Bud’s Sport Center, he continued with a wholesale bait business, eventually having the opportunity to set up a bait and tackle shop at the Lake Park Cenex/Hardware Hank building. Bud had the honor of being inducted into the Minnesota Softball Hall of Fame in 2001. It was a special occasion that his family was able to celebrate with him. The greatest joy in his life were his kids, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Bud is survived by his wife, Becky; daughters, Jody (Ethan King) Harms and Jana (Paul) Thompson; grandchildren, Brady (Kaley) Harms, Taylor (Addie) Harms, Jordan Harms, Drew Thompson, Marissa Thompson, and Paige Thompson; great-grandchildren, Beckett and Lennon Harms and Harper and Jude Harms; sister, LaVonne Askelson; in-laws, Bev and Bob Imhoff, Gene and Linda Schulstad, Diane and Tony Passanate, Paul Schulstad, Lori and Verne Peterson, and Joyce and Alan Newton; and many nieces, nephews, and 4 Godchildren.

Bud was preceded in death by his parents; one sister; and two brothers-in-law.

A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, September 16 at 4:00 P.M. at Oak Grove Cemetery, Detroit Lakes.
