Ellen C. Primus

Ellen Primus, age 89, of Hawley, died Tuesday, November 20, 2018 at the Hawley Senior Living under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley.

Ellen Catherine Schreifels was born on April 21, 1929 in Richmond, MN, to John and Frances (Kron) Schreifels. Ellen grew up in Melrose, MN, where she met her husband, Wilfred “Bill” Primus. Ellen and Bill got married on May 18, 1949 and started a family together. They moved to Morris, MN for a few years before moving to Moorhead in 1967 where Ellen worked as a waitress and bartender for the Fargo Country Club. They moved to Hawley in 1976 and Ellen continued to work at the Country Club until her retirement. After retiring, she began working at Ron’s Supervalu in the bakery department.

Ellen loved spending time with her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, canning vegetables and jelly, playing cards, puzzles, reading, and making many quilts for her family to enjoy. Ellen had a strong faith in God and was very involved in her church, especially the turkey dinners.

Ellen is survived by her sons, Roger (Deb) and Jeff (Sonya), both of Hawley; daughters, Karla (Don) Anderson of Ft. Collins, CO and Sharon (Gary) Waller of Hoffman, MN; grandchildren, Jessie, Jeremie, Melissa, Jessica, Santos, Samantha, Stephanie, Ian, Brittney, Derek, Luke and Ryan; 11 great-grandchildren; and sisters, Alice Moenning and Ester Steinemann.

Ellen is preceded in death by her husband, Bill; daughter, Michelle Maestas; son, Gary Primus; and eight siblings.

A visitation will be held on Friday, November 23, 2018 from 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM with a prayer service starting at 6:00 PM at Wright Funeral Home, Hawley. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, November 24, 2018 at 1:00 PM at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church, Hawley. Burial will be at Hawley Cemetery, following the service.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Hawley Senior Living, Hospice of the Red River Valley, St. Andrew’s Catholic Church, and the Whistle Stop crew for the love and support they gave Ellen over the years.
