Evelyn Stuart

Evelyn Marie Stuart, 96, Moorhead, MN, passed away on Sunday, August 25, 2019 at Sanford’s Palliative Care Unit in Fargo, ND.

Evelyn Marie “Evie” Swenson was born November 19, 1922, in Mason City, Iowa, the daughter of Elmer and Addie Swenson. Her family moved to Saint Paul, MN, where Evie attended public schools and graduated from Johnson High School in 1940. It was there that Evie met her future husband Roger Stuart and they were married in First Lutheran Church in Saint Paul on July 11, 1942.

In 1950 Evie and Rog moved to Moorhead, MN, where they raised their 4 children and various dogs and cats in their home on 16th Street South. They loved the pets just as much as the kids did. It was a fine neighborhood filled with young families and kids and where lifelong friendships were made. The family became full members of Trinity Lutheran Church in Moorhead in 1953 where Evie was active in Circle, quilting, women’s groups and helped make all the bake sales a success with her amazing apple pies and dessert breads.

Evie was a wonderful saleswoman and had a career at McShane’s in Fargo and in the Oval Room at Dayton’s in West Acres. She could sew her own beautiful clothes and made custom drapes for her home. She had a wonderful sense of style and always looked classy. She loved flowers and gardening and her yard always looked beautiful in the summer. She made quilts and afghans for her family and in the last two years, crocheted little beanie hats for newborns. Evie and Rog were able to take several road trips around the United States after they both retired and enjoyed going to the horse races in Winnipeg. She also loved John Wayne westerns and Bonanza and Little House on the Prairie and loved to laugh at the Golden Girls every night until midnight or later. She had a wonderful, quirky sense of humor.

Evie and Rog were married for 67 years until he passed away in 2009. She is survived by her children Joel of Moorhead and Minneapolis, MN; Jim (Ann) Stuart of Lino Lakes, MN; Mike (Sandra) Stuart of Tampa, FL; sister Ardene Martin of Houston, TX; brother Donald Swenson of Maple Grove, MN.

Grandchildren include Pamela (Alvin) Hubbard, Rhonda (Trevor) Dietrich, Megan Stuart, Tyler Stuart; Great Grandchildren: Madison Varone, Miranda Hubbard and Harrison (Kelly) Varone and one Great-Great Grandchild, Isla Jane Varone. Loving nieces include Jan, Claudia, Betsy, Robin and Jayne and loving nephew Jim and his wife Kate.

Evie was preceded in death by her husband Roger, loving daughter Nancy, brother-in-law Tom Martin and sister-in-law Bobbie Swenson.

Special thanks for the wonderful care Mom received from the nurses at Sanford’s Palliative Care Unit and all the support and wonderful care she received from Sanford Home Health over the years.

A memorial service will be held at Wright Funeral Home in Moorhead, MN, on Wednesday, September 18 at 11 a.m. with visitation one hour prior to the service. Lunch will be served after the service. Memorials are suggested to her church of almost 70 years, Trinity Lutheran in Moorhead.
