George H. Messerschmidt

George was born June 15, 1930, in Moorhead, MN, to Ed and Clara Bursch Messerschmidt. He grew up in Glyndon and graduated from Glyndon High School. He then worked for a time in Glyndon before enlisting in the U.S. Marine Corps. While in the service, he was involved with Atomic Bomb testing in Nevada and served for two years before returning to Glyndon. He married Irene Payne in Dilworth, MN, and together they made their home in Glyndon and raised their family. George worked for several years with Northern States Power, now Xcel Energy, and in 1971, bought the Tastee Freeze in Glyndon, which they owned and operated until George retired in 1992. George was one of the founding members of the Glyndon Rod and Gun Club, and was an original member of the Glyndon Volunteer Fire Department. He enjoyed spending time outdoors, hunting, fishing and gardening, but most of all loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He will be dearly missed.George is survived by his wife, Irene; children, Michael Kristine Messerschmidt of North Oaks, MN, Nancy Barbee of Glyndon, MN, Debbie Neil Blanchard of Moorhead, MN, Julie Charles Fugere of Moorhead, MN, Mary Jo Landa of Dilworth, MN, Lori Troy DeJong of Glyndon, MN; 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; brothers, Loren Gail, Robert Ardyce, Gordy Tonya, Roy Willetta; sister, Clarene Butenhoff; and many nieces and nephews.He was preceded in death by his parents, and brother, Edward.
