George Richard Honek, 92, passed away on February 13, 2020, at River Pointe, Moorhead, MN. Prior to moving to River Pointe in late 2019, he had lived in the family home where he and Ellen raised their children for 61 years.
George was born on February 2, 1928, in Mahnomen to Anton Honek and Thressa Ondrush. His parents farmed outside of Mahnomen.
George and Ellen Hendrickson were married on October 30, 1948, later moving to Moorhead. George and Ellen were lifelong members of St. Joseph’s Parish.
George was employed by Pepsi Company and Overhead Door. After retirement, George worked part time for 25 years for Whale of a Wash. George, being a handy man, thoroughly enjoyed his job of maintaining the mechanical operations.
George was an avid gardener who enjoyed growing, cooking, and eating his crops. George enjoyed his McDonald’s morning coffee club group of friends.
George was a fun-loving man who liked to tease others. He enjoyed a good joke. In his younger years, he enjoyed hunting and fishing.
George is survived by his 5 children, Marilyn (Jerry) James, Chino Hills, CA, Jim, Fargo, ND, Jerry (Laurie) Moorhead, MN, Patricia (Bruce) Leonard, Fargo, ND, and Mike (Michele), Dilworth, MN; George was proud of his grandchildren, Kyle, Matt, Emily, Leah, Brooke, Sydney, Cole, Brandon, and Bridgette; great-grandchildren, Dayton, Jaxsen, Afton, and Noelia; and sister, Celia Stilwell, resides in WA
George is preceded in death by his wife of almost 70 years Ellen; his parents; brothers, Frank, Tony, and John; and sister, Frances Kneip.
Visitation will be from 10:00 A.M. – 11:00 A.M., followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 A.M., Tuesday, February 18, 2020, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Moorhead, MN. Burial will be at St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery following the service.
The Honek family would like to thank the staff of River Pointe and Hospice of the Red River Valley for their compassionate and professional care of their beloved father.
