George Thomas Mallick

April 10, 1927 — May 25, 2021

George Thomas Mallick of Moorhead, Minnesota, passed away peacefully on May 25, 2021. Up to the time of his passing, he was still telling colorful stories and flashing his big smile.

George was born April 10, 1927, in Jamestown, North Dakota, to Louis and Marie (Lacey) Mallick. He attended Sacred Heart Academy in Fargo, ND, and went on to enlist in the Army. He returned to Fargo and enrolled in North Dakota State through the G.I. Bill. His considerable charm attracted the attention of his fellow student, the lovely Lois Cunningham. As George said, “He outkicked his coverage.” And persuaded Lois to marry him. Together they hade five children; Michael, Kim, Terry, Kelly (Chick) Lindsay, and Kristy (Terri Starkey) Lynch. He also leaves 13 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild.

The need to make his own way led George through many job experiences, including collecting money as a paper boy, working for tips as a bellhop, toiling in the stockyards, teaching recruits as a Gunnery Sergeant, managing a construction business, and selling real estate. He learned something from every job and could tell the story to go with it. George also served in the National Guard for many years and enjoyed time with his boys as a Scout Master in the Boy Scouts.

George livened up a room with his smile, snappy dress, engaging anecdotes, and big heart. He was always ready to lift someone up or lend a helping hand, especially when battling the Red River floods. Other organizations he participated in include the Fargo, Moorhead Rock Club, Campfire Girls, Elks, and Knights of Columbus. He was a man of faith and a loving father.

George is survived by his children and grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife, Lois; his sister, Bernadette Velguth; daughter-in-law, Debra Mallick. Special thanks to the caring staff at Ecumen Evergreens in Moorhead and Red River Valley Hospice.
