Gladys V. Houglum

Gladys V. Houglum, 77, Moorhead, MN, died on Wednesday, April 21, 2005, in Manor Care Nursing Home, Fargo, ND.Gladys V. Houglum was born on August 29, 1927, near Flom, MN, to Edwin and Nellie Nelson Stende. She attended rural school district 46 and graduated from Ulen, MN, High School. She attended Moorhead State College in Moorhead, MN, and then taught school in Norman County, MN. Gladys married Joseph Houglum on September 7, 1947, in Flom, MN. They farmed near Flom and she worked in her brother's Red Owl Store in Flom, before going to work for Crystal Sugar in Moorhead. In 1981, they moved to Moorhead. Her husband, Joseph, died on January 25, 2001. She was a member of the VFW Auxilliary. Gladys had been active in her church in Flom, Aspelund Lutheran and at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Moorhead where she was a quilter. She also helped teach handicapped children and worked in the library in the Moorhead Public Schools. She was always active and enjoyed keeping busy. She also enjoyed her grandchildren and great-granchildren. Gladys is survived by her son, Jon Bonnie, Christiana, TX; daughter, Julie Tim Waterbury, Moorhead, MN; brother, Sy Shotty Stende, Mayville, ND; two sisters, Muriel Meyer, Grandin, ND, and Helen Erickson, Detroit Lakes, MN; four grandchildren, Stacy and Lora Howard and Mathew and Jon Kristi Houglum; four great-grandchildren, Jazmine, Ethan and Ashley Howard and Brandy Houglum; three step-grandchildren.She is preceded in death by three brother, Eugene, Clarence, and Lester Stende; one sister, Eleanor Odland.
