Gordon O. Brakke

Gordon O. Brakke, 79, of Moorhead, MN, passed away on Monday, June 3, 2013, at Sanford Health’s Palliative Care Unit, Fargo, ND.

Gordon was born on his grandparent’s farm in Horace, ND, on March 16, 1934, to Oscar and Clara Brink Brakke. He was one of nine children. Gordon was baptized and confirmed at the Hoff Lutheran Church. He graduated from Comstock High School.

On May 22, 1954, Gordon married Shirley Zentgraf at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, Moorhead, MN. They were the first couple married in the church. During their 59 years of marriage, they raised five children and had six grandchildren. They farmed near Comstock, MN, and were members of the Comstock Lutheran Church.

Gordon served in the Army National Guard. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, and time with friends in Florida. He served on the boards of Comstock Lutheran Church and the Holy Cross Township Board.

Gordon is survived by his wife of 59 years, Shirley; children, Keith Bev Brakke of Moorhead, Kristin Kevin Bakko of Moorhead, Kim Don Hovden of Fargo, Kari Geoff Hopewell McLean of Kindred, Robert Brakke of Comstock; six grandchildren, Lindsay Adam Hollman of Columbus, NE, Ryan Emily Bakko of Edina, MN, Kelsey Bakko of Sartell, MN, Jason Brakke of Glenwood Springs, CO, Kayla Michael Brakke of Moorhead, and Brent Hovden of Fargo. He is also survived by a sister, Helen Brakke of Fargo; sister-in-law, Rhoda Brakke of Moorhead; brother, Donald Dorothy Brakke of West Fargo; sister, Bev Carlson of Wolverton; sister, Eleanor Robert Brandt of Moorhead; brother, Norman Sheila Brakke of Everett, WA; along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Gordon was preceded in death by his parents, Oscar and Clara Brakke; sister, Mildred Evert; brothers, Bud and Orris Brakke; brothers-in-law, Carl Carlson and Delbert Evert; sister-in-law, Lorraine Brakke; nephews, Rod Brakke and Lee Brakke, and niece, Carol Nelson.

Visitation: Thursday, June 6, 2013, from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m., with prayer service at 7 p.m., in Wright Funeral Home, Moorhead, MN.
Funeral: Friday, June 7, 2013, at 2:00 p.m., in Comstock Lutheran Church, Comstock, MN.
Interment: Comstock Lutheran Cemetery
