Harold LaVerne Cary, 89, Dilworth formerly Lake Park and Ulen, died Wednesday, April 7, 2010, at Eventide Lutheran Home, Moorhead, MN. Harold LaVerne Cary was born March 29, 1921, near Hawley, MN to Ira Merten and Lilly Jane Cary. He was the youngest of seven boys. Harold was baptized and confirmed at Atlanta Lutheran Church near Ulen, MN. He attended school in Ulen through the 8th grade. After the 8th grade, Harold helped on the family farm. He joined the Navy in 1944, spending time in Farragut, ID, Philippine Islands and New Guinea. In 1946, he was discharged from the Navy and spent a month hitchhiking across the U.S. before returning to Ulen. On March 14, 1947, he married Eileen Syverson of Ulen. They made their home in Ulen, Lake Park and Dilworth. They are blessed with five children, 12 grandchildren, and 9 great-grandchildren. Harold farmed near Ulen and later worked in Detroit Lakes for ASC. He retired at age 67 from the Minnesota Highway Patrol, where he worked as a dispatcher for over 20 years. Upon his retirement, Harold and Eileen spent their winters traveling to Arizona and Texas for 10 years. Harold enjoyed working on the lawn and garden, watching and listening to the birds, and watching baseball. He is survived by his wife, Eileen, Dilworth, MN; three sons, Dean Brenda Cary, Upper Saddle River, NJ, Keith Pat Cary, Ojai, CA and Neil, Bismarck, ND; two daughters, Pam Hank Wuertz, Blaine, MN and Bonnie Mark Johnson, Moorhead, MN; 12 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.He is preceded in death by his parents and 6 brothers.
