Hazel Haarstad died on February 27, 2013 peacefully at her home surrounded by family. Hazel was born March 3, 1934 in Moorhead. She was the daughter of Ovean and Hazel Hite. Hazel was raised in rural Glyndon and attended school at a one-room school #22 west and at Averill, graduating from Glyndon High School. During that time she was active in her local 4H.
Hazel married Jim Haarstad on November 9, 1952. They recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. Hazel was active in community activities including serving as president of Moorhead Mrs. Jaycees and teaching Sunday school and bible school at Trinity Lutheran Church in Moorhead. She worked as a paraprofessional for the Harbor School of Moorhead and for the Moorhead School System for 25 years. After she retired she became actively involved in Zion Lutheran Church on Franklin Lake where she spent many Tuesdays working with the quilters. She was also active in PEO and became a recent volunteer with Hospice of Red River Valley. Jim and Hazel spent many wonderful years enjoying their lake homes, first on Little Cormorant Lake and later on Pelican Lake, as well as their condo in Arizona. Hazel and Jim enjoyed their many frequent travels and visiting with family and friends.
Hazel is survived by her husband Jim and her three children: Dave Sue Haarstad Rogers, MN: Deb Bob Remark Moorhead, MN: and Dawn Groslie Moorhead, MN. She is survived by six grandchildren: Nicole Josh Swanson, Michael Anna Haarstad, Lisa Remark fiancé Dustin Thorson, Heather Nick Olson, Rob Remark fiancée Amber Henne and Cy Groslie, and 2 great grandchildren Emma and Katelyn Swanson. She is also survived by her 6 siblings: Delores Bradford, Don Bradford, Lowell Gerre Bradford, Helen Dale Eastlick, Vona Williams and Delano Linda Bradford, brother in-laws Oscar Geri Haarstad, Walt Kolle and many nieces and nephews.
Hazel was preceded in death by her parents Ovean and Hazel Hite, sister Lee Kolle, infant brother Lenny Bradford, son-in-law Craig Groslie, sister-in-law Carol Bradford, brother-in law Gary Williams and brother-in-law Wes Haarstad.
Hazel expressed her desire to thank her many friends for their love and prayers. She also wanted to thank Dr. Gross, the 7th floor staff of Sanford and staff of Hospice of the Red River Valley for the care they provided her throughout her illness.
The family will greet friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., on Friday, March 1, at Wright Funeral Home in Moorhead.
The funeral service for Hazel will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 2 at Trinity Lutheran Church.
There will be a memorial service held in the spring at Zion Lutheran Church.
Memorials can be given to Hospice of the Red River, Zion Lutheran Church building fund or Trinity Lutheran Church Foundation.
