Hazel M. Kjelvik, 81, of Lake Park, died Thursday, September 17, 2009 in Viking Manor, Ulen, MN.Hazel Mae was born June 23, 1928 in Salisbury, Maryland to Carrol Young and Blanche Irvin Messick. She grew up and attended school in Salisbury. Hazel met Leif Kjelvik while he was serving in the navy. They married on August 24, 1949. She was a dedicated wife to her husband, Leif, and a beloved mother to their five kids. All five kids were a challenge in their own ways, but she managed to weather the storm of "situations" that arose from them all by being "the enforcer". Hazel and Leif ran two successful grocery stores in Maryland and Delaware before moving to Minnesota. Hazel worked as a waitress, and at the Hawley Manor Retirement Home. She enjoyed dancing, gardening, time at the lakes, playing cards, and stuffed animals. She has been battling Alzheimer's Disease, dementia, and COPD but never lost her spunky, fighting spirit. Hazel is survived by two sons, Ken Kjelvik, Lake Park, MN and Norman Gloria Kjelvik, Seattle, WA; one daughter, Kay Dean Marvig, Hawley, MN; eleven grandchildren, Brady Peck, Kristin Peck, Melissa Kjelvik, Krystal Kjelvik, Sterling Kjelvik, Margie Gill, Brian Kjelvik, Susan Hofelich, Mike Jester, Darren Kjelvik, and Angela Kjelvik; and 11 great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, Leif, son, Bruce Kjelvik; daughter, Donna Jester; two brothers, Billy and Preston Young.
