Hazel M. Scott

Hazel Eileen Moritz was born on April 13, 1922, in Royal Oak, Michigan. She was the daughter of Henry C. and Charlotte L. Lorenz Moritz. She grew up in Royal Oak, and graduated from Royal Oak High School. She received her bachelor's degree from Albion College and advanced degrees from Michigan State University and Indiana University. Hazel began her teaching career at Grinnell College, where she met her husband, Davis A. Scott. They were married in 1951 and had lived and worked in Iowa, Kentucky, and Indiana, before moving with their three children to Moorhead, Minnesota, in 1966. Hazel was employed at Minnesota State University Moorhead as a professor of speech and director of forensics. She touched the lives of countless students throughout her long career. She retired in 1989 and devoted herself to a variety of volunteer activities in the community. Hazel died on April 9, 2009, at Innovis Hospital in Fargo ND. She was preceded in death by her parents, her son Timothy D. Scott, her brother, Henry C. Moritz, Jr., and her sister, Charlotte L. Moritz. Hazel is survived by her husband Davis, son Kirk Scott, daughter Laura Scott, and son-in-law Jim Pritchett. She is also survived by her sisters Arlene Graves and Caroline Sloat and many nieces and nephews. Her family and many friends mourn the loss of this truly loving, caring, and compassionate person whose life exemplified the belief that there is that of God in everyone.The family request no flowers. Those who wish may make a contribution in Hazel's memory to The Salvation Army for its flood relief services.A private, family service will be held prior to interment at Prairie Home Cemetery in Moorhead, MN.
