Helen Clarice Davidson-Flores, 87, Moorhead, MN, died Saturday, August 3, 2019 in her home at Eventide- Linden Tree Circle, under the care of her husband, Israel Flores, and Hospice of the Red River Valley and Eventide Nursing Home.
Helen was born on April 3, 1932 in Thief River Falls, MN, to Henry and Coral (Muzzy) Sorenson. She grew up on the farm south of Thief River Falls, went to school and graduated from there, and attended a two-year teacher’s college. While teaching in a one-room schoolhouse in Ringbo township near Holt, MN, she met and married Glenn Davidson on July 25, 1954. They eventually made their home in Roseau, MN, where they had three children. After all the kids started school, Helen went back to work as a teacher’s aide, attended night school, and finally earned a Master’s degree in Special Education. Helen had a passion for teaching, earning several awards, including Teacher of the Year in Goodridge, MN, and she also taught Sunday school and Cub Scouts.
After retirement, she and Glenn moved to Moorhead to be closer to their grandchildren. They also traveled around the United States and Canada. After Glenn died in 2006, Helen married Israel Flores, an old army buddy of Glenn’s, whose family they had kept in touch with over the years.
Helen and Israel continued to travel and spent time participating in church activities. Helen especially enjoyed working with the quilters and making mittens for children. She also read books and did word and number puzzles to keep her mind sharp. She was a member of the local chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and sat on the board of the L.B. Hartz Foundation, where she got to present scholarship grants to local college students. Most of all, she loved spending time with her family, decorating her house and preparing special meals for holiday get-togethers, and attending activities to watch her grandchildren participate.
Helen is survived by her husband Israel Flores; children, Craig (Linda) Davidson, Moorhead, Clyde Davidson, Roseau, MN, and Stacy Davidson, Moorhead; step-children, Israel (Cindy) Flores, Jr., Ron (Mary) Flores, and Roxanne (Luis) Tena, all of Texas; sister, Audrey (Harold) Isaacson, Seattle, WA; brother, Orville Sorenson, Wisconsin; special sister-in-law, Carol Comstock, Roseau; four grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and many members of her second family, the Flores’. Helen was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Glenn Davidson; sister, Shirley Eckers; brothers, Henry Jr., Harlan, and Roger Sorenson; sister-in-law, Lorraine Swenson; and several nieces and nephews.
The family would like to express their thanks to Hospice of the Red River Valley and Eventide for the care and support that Helen and Israel received.
