Herb was born December 13, 1915 to Carl and Mabel Nelson Aakre. He attended country school at Woodland District #3. He worked on area farms, was a self-employed trucker and spent a short time working in Kent, Washington. He returned to Minnesota, entered the Army, and served 3 ý years in the South Pacific, during World War II. After his discharge, he married Clarice Thorson on December 15, 1945. They owned and operated a farm in Eglon Township until their retirement in 1986. Herb and Clarice stayed on the farm and rented the land to their son, Wayne. Herb loved being a farmer and continued to help with spring work and harvest for another twenty years. Herb enjoyed reading western and mystery novels, watching Twins baseball, telling stories of growing up in Rollag during the Depression, and spending time with his family and grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Lorraine & Mildred; four brothers, Raymond, James, Carl and Robert Aakre; brothers-in-law, Axle Flaten, Maurice Dan Henry, and Ted Herbranson. Herb is survived by his wife of 63 years, Clarice, Hawley, MN; three sons, Michael Verlyn Aakre, Dilworth, MN; Wayne Mary Aakre, Hawley, MN, and Kelly Aakre, Moorhead, MN; grandchildren, Stephanie Ron Mullenbach, Lakeville, MN, Ryan Aakre, Elk River, MN, Arek Aakre, Fosston, MN, Mark Aakre, Hawley, MN, and Cameron Aakre, Moorhead, MN; two sisters, Charlotte Henry and Anna Herbranson; one brother, Laurence Florence Aakre; sisters-in-law, Norma Aakre, Ardis Aakre, Lorraine Aakre and Agnes Aakre; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
